Grains
Agriculture is the primary occupation of the Santals. They grow rice and other
grains in fields that have been owned by their families for centuries. They are
however, dependent on the
vagaries of the monsoons and other seasonal rains to
provide them with water for their crops. This in turn results in making their
main source of income, a big gamble.
Rural Innovations Company works with the Santal community in finding long-term
solutions to this centuries old problem and other such issues that have crippled
their ability to earn a steady income. Some of the areas we are focusing our
energies on are:
• Innovations in irrigation methods
• Pros and cons of genetically reengineered seeds
• Modernizing cultivation techniques
• Introducing machinery into agriculture
• Research into land fertility and output maximization
